What is BIKEAROO? Bikearoo is a fundraising concert setup by mountain biking enthusiast in Liberty (LibertyBikeTrail.org) to help out local organizations that make a difference in our community.
In 2008 LibertyBikeTrail.org founder Nick Piatek and his wife Marcy where throwing around new names for the Liberty Bicycling Festival in their home in the Catskills. After some ridiculous names suggested by Nick, his wife Marcy suggested the best of all — BIKEAROO.
The original BIKEAROO happened in August of 2009. It took place at Walnut Mountain in the Town of Liberty, NY and featured bands from New Jersey, NYC, Connecticut, Scranton, and the Hudson Valley area of NY.
After months of preparation, radio appearances, big sponsors, the event did not meet the original expectation. The accompanying mountain bike race was cancelled by the organizer causing a large financial loss, and the concert was not highly attended and was interrupted by a massive line of thunderstorms.
The pain of the event not working out was so huge that the organizer Nick, could not even speak the BIKEAROO name for years.
FROM THE ASHES
In 2014 Brian Rourke opened the Downtown Barn in Liberty. While Nick was taking pictures of live music in Liberty at the BARN, he felt it was time to for BIKEAROO to rise again but this time with help from an established INDOORS venue.
Nick mentioned the idea of having another BIKEAROO to one of the original bands, Strangers Wasted, and without hesitation they joined the show again. That same day the Downtown Barn offered to host the event, the date was set, and the rest is history. BIKEAROO 2015 was born!
The original purpose of BIKEAROO was to raise awareness and funds for cycling trails around the Town of Liberty. But Liberty has such a great Parks and Rec Department that takes care of the parks, and the awesome people from Renegades Bike Club in Wawarsing that build & maintain the trails on Walnut that it reached the point of there is not much we can do to the trails anymore.
So the group decided that the show would support a cause in Liberty that would directly impact the live of people living in and around the Town of Liberty.
This year the show will support the Liberty Begin Again Transitional Services for Veterans. The group wants to refurbish a home in Liberty to host Veterans that need a hand transitioning back into society. This cause not only reuses vacant property in Liberty, but directly impacts the lives of people who put their lives on the line for us — for that we are eternally grateful and willing to do whatever it takes to raise the funds they need.
BIKEAROO will go on to be an annual event where Mountain Bikers give back to the community. The response this year has been so overwhelming, that it needs to go on!
Come out on June 6th to the Downtown Barn in Liberty from 6-11PM and check out what BIKEAROO is all about!
